a ministry place for cell and small groups,
missionaries and music groups.

i'm still getting response (email, youtube) from all over the world since i started this djembe for worship project in 2008 so do send me a second email if i fail to reply your first.

i appreciate the goodwill but due to paypal issues i'm afraid i can't take donation or money order. you can however engage me to teach in your church or organization, no matter where you are from.

FAQ

what size?

it really depends on what you're using it for. i would recommend 10", which serves up to 25 pax in a controlled environment, if you need to bring it around often. a 12" will have more bass and overtones, and can reach up to 35 pax.

which type?

the traditional wood body, animal skin and rope tuning gives a more ethnic tone. it's also deeper more mellow. it's more susceptible to humidity and rope tuning doesn't last as long as the modern makes' lug tuning. your best bet is to try them out, see which best suits where you are and the type of music you play.

your methods are non trad. do you have your own schemes?

what i do with the djembe is totally unorthodox, so there is no official way to play or write the music. but essentially, i do everything based on 16th notes, and use mostly

Bass | touch | Open tone | Closed (harmonic) tone

also.

my personal portfolio has moved.

my website will still serve as a one stop; succinct and introductory.
purpose is to dedicate this space to worship instruction; djembe, guitar and drum.

LITTLE ZAC DRUMS!

the latest addition and edition of the really adorable drum student!

zac is about 7 and is still a tad too small for the drumset.
but only 3 months into drumming and he's sight reading 16 bar phrases infested with 8th and 16th notes!

and so i couldn't resist.

CAROLLING @ FAREAST SQUARE

this far east stint (made possible by a little dream) made me some good music friends. it was easy playing them. most things were on the fly (of course homework before flying) but fluid and of great vibe. clarence was on guitar for the first round and 4th, feri for 9th and 16th. brad on sax for 4th and 9th and jonathan for 16th. i had the pleasure of playing with them all.

after being beaten twice by the belching saxophone i miked up my djembe and there was finally no volume judo last night. sequence was mostly intro, main melody, improv, solo, trade, back to melody and outro.

personal favourite: rudolph the rednose reindeer in REGGAE.

set: fly me to the moon / summer time / close to you / sunny / girl from ipanema /
santa claus is coming to town / rudolph the rednose reindeer / have yourself a little merry christmas / jingle bells / auld lang syne

more on the musicians:

brad swope plays for thomson big band and a little dream
clarence yeo plays regular gigs at wala wala with local singer tay kewei, and a little dream
feri susanto plays for thomson swing band and a little dream
jonathan lim plays for the SAF and thomson big band and a little dream
