a ministry place for cell and small groups,
missionaries and music groups.

i'm still getting response (email, youtube) from all over the world since i started this djembe for worship project in 2008 so do send me a second email if i fail to reply your first.

i appreciate the goodwill but due to paypal issues i'm afraid i can't take donation or money order. you can however engage me to teach in your church or organization, no matter where you are from.

FAQ

what size?

it really depends on what you're using it for. i would recommend 10", which serves up to 25 pax in a controlled environment, if you need to bring it around often. a 12" will have more bass and overtones, and can reach up to 35 pax.

which type?

the traditional wood body, animal skin and rope tuning gives a more ethnic tone. it's also deeper more mellow. it's more susceptible to humidity and rope tuning doesn't last as long as the modern makes' lug tuning. your best bet is to try them out, see which best suits where you are and the type of music you play.

your methods are non trad. do you have your own schemes?

what i do with the djembe is totally unorthodox, so there is no official way to play or write the music. but essentially, i do everything based on 16th notes, and use mostly

Bass | touch | Open tone | Closed (harmonic) tone

also.

huayi festival 2009 @ esplanade, bevlyn and friends.

wah yong | lim hui | james | bevlyn | deng li

it was a night of mostly fusion, samba and mainstream, with some cny tunes.

somehow it's all about progression. in music, life, tastes and friends musical or not.
from squeezing too many notes into a crotchet and lavishing fills and frills on every phrase
to just doing it laid back, playing it light yet keeping it tight.

la vie en rose

meng xing shi fen (the waking moment)

4pm set up, sound check
6pm dinner (gyu don!), courtesy of bevlyn
7pm admin (shower for james, makeup for bev)
730pm set 1
815pm intermission
845pm set 2

there was wind and grey but rain never came.
james lugged his barang barang and proclaimed (also in one of the photos) "no bathe, no play!"
then he practiced the song we didn't soundcheck in the shower.
we (wah yong, lucky you) had to suffer 2 verses and a chorus.

A-HAs:

james is a gatsby person.
bevlyn can only take jap food before gigs.
lim hui's bf can recharge her for 2x 16bar solos.
wah yong's equipment...he must be driving a bus or something.

very blessed to still be playing alongside Chrisitians even out of church.

photos are courtesy of deng li, the official garang photographer.

in the dressing room...

james: no bathe, no play! come and join me...
bev: eee, so scandalous!
james: there is no hanger, can you believe this?!
bev: can you stop being so diva?! diva pianist...

classic moment.
