i'm still getting response (email, youtube) from all over the world since i started this djembe for worship project in 2008 so do send me a second email if i fail to reply your first.

i appreciate the goodwill but due to paypal issues i'm afraid i can't take donation or money order. you can however engage me to teach in your church or organization, no matter where you are from.

FAQ

what size?

it really depends on what you're using it for. i would recommend 10", which serves up to 25 pax in a controlled environment, if you need to bring it around often. a 12" will have more bass and overtones, and can reach up to 35 pax.

which type?

the traditional wood body, animal skin and rope tuning gives a more ethnic tone. it's also deeper more mellow. it's more susceptible to humidity and rope tuning doesn't last as long as the modern makes' lug tuning. your best bet is to try them out, see which best suits where you are and the type of music you play.

your methods are non trad. do you have your own schemes?

what i do with the djembe is totally unorthodox, so there is no official way to play or write the music. but essentially, i do everything based on 16th notes, and use mostly

Bass | touch | Open tone | Closed (harmonic) tone

also.

the May things.

apologies! things happened, and i'm still reacting to them so the diy recording tutorial and harmony podcast series will have to move to june. sorry! meanwhile, other updates:

wedding. juliana and ee chia @ waterfront lawn, rasa sentosa.

they had no wet weather plans (yikes!) but the gloomy sky let up just before sundown. i brought the full kit, and it was my first with just a piano. the stage couldn't accomodate and they had planned for activities so we had to migrate to the grass patches above. we proceeded to realise that we needed light (outdoor, no direct light) for our lyrics and charts and also a flat ground for the drums and mikes.

we ended up here (the most even ground we could find!)

so we moved a second time, with a light. after having located the sweet spot, we became too far from the speakers, and since there were no monitors we had to adjust to latency. (phew!) so marrying couples, take note if you intend to have a live band outdoors!

but we pulled it off. and the wedding was great! windson and juliet went trilingual and attempted several oldies, chinese and cantonese classics and the guests joined in the choruses.
