a ministry place for cell and small groups,
missionaries and music groups.

i'm still getting response (email, youtube) from all over the world since i started this djembe for worship project in 2008 so do send me a second email if i fail to reply your first.

i appreciate the goodwill but due to paypal issues i'm afraid i can't take donation or money order. you can however engage me to teach in your church or organization, no matter where you are from.

FAQ

what size?

it really depends on what you're using it for. i would recommend 10", which serves up to 25 pax in a controlled environment, if you need to bring it around often. a 12" will have more bass and overtones, and can reach up to 35 pax.

which type?

the traditional wood body, animal skin and rope tuning gives a more ethnic tone. it's also deeper more mellow. it's more susceptible to humidity and rope tuning doesn't last as long as the modern makes' lug tuning. your best bet is to try them out, see which best suits where you are and the type of music you play.

your methods are non trad. do you have your own schemes?

what i do with the djembe is totally unorthodox, so there is no official way to play or write the music. but essentially, i do everything based on 16th notes, and use mostly

Bass | touch | Open tone | Closed (harmonic) tone

also.

my website will still serve as a one stop; succinct and introductory.
purpose is to dedicate this space to worship instruction; djembe, guitar and drum.

ivy & boon huat, st regis, 3 oct

L to R jon, myself, judy, ivy, boonhuat, feri

royalty affair.

that was what i thought when i stepped into the ballroom with my barang barang. from the ballroom fixtures to the wedding decor, this couple was determined to give their friends and relatives a memorable wedding celebration.

ivy is from hongkong, and so were a third of the guests. the wedding planner was smart to engage a cantonese proficient emcee (not to mention his angmoh and cheena also Astar type) who tickled the guests throughout the dinner with witty impromptus and experienced hosting.

the band had (we all agreed after) the best stage and sound (audience too, because the emcee kept introducing us at the beginning and the end of our sets) so far. a generous stage (we usually get XS ones and had to contort), an elaborate mixing board, a fantastic arsenal of mikes (i had my entire drumkit miked up!), a dedicated soundman...we even had mons and lights on our music stands! thanks colin!

judy was fabulous. she can really sing! we did mostly classic ballads like 'have i told you', 'the way you love me' and some cantopop. there was some swing and bossa (i felt so alive during those tunes...) and i always learn something new by playing with feri. he can really walk for a guitarist!

jon on sax, feri on guitar, judy on vocals, myself on drums.

official writeup, and more photos from a little dream soon.

gamsia ALD!
